This year’s Essence festival was one to remember! In it’s 24 years of history, the Essence Festival has never seen a number of attendees this large! Over half a million people came out and showed love and support for their favorite artists. This years festival was held at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, LA. The lineup included legendary artists like Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu and many others, we know this years attendees had a blast!
Along with the several artists who performed, the festival held its daytime conference with hundreds of influential speakers. Many of which included, Vivica Fox, Lester Holt, Iyanla Vanzant, and many more! Meek Mills and Remy Ma also joined the stage with well-known journalist, Lester Holt, to talk about the issues the black community has faced regarding prison and the prison reform.
The fans were also ecstatic to see appearances from Queen Latifah and Janet Jackson, both legendary artists mourning over the deaths over their parents. Queen, losing her mother to a heart condition back in March, joined the stage on Saturday with Hip-hop icons Missy Eliot, Salt-N-Pepa, and MC Lyte to remind everyone of her vocal skills that helped jump start her career 30 years ago. Latifah performed hits such as “Ladies First,” “U.N.I.T.Y,” and “Just Another Day,” followed by a Jazz classic and the Papa’s 1960’s anthem called, “California Dreaming.”
To close out the festival, Janet Jackson lit up the stage on Sunday night. Her performance was nothing short of extraordinary as she fought back tears after providing the large crowd with a speech pertaining her late father, Joe Jackson’s death. While in the midst of one of her best performances ever, Jackson decided to momentarily pause everything and give a tribute to her father who lost his battle to cancer nearly two weeks ago. She stated that she, “Didn’t know how to move forward” and that she even considered canceling both the festival and tour, but after consulting with her brother she decided to carry on with all of her planned events.
