The most important issue of Vogue magazine is coming out in September and guess who’s going to be on the cover of it? You guessed it–Beyonce! Not only will she be featured on the cover of it, she has also made history by hiring the first black photographer to shoot it in its first 126-years of history!
Tyler Mitchell is only 23 years old and he has been chosen by Beyonce to shoot the cover of Vogue magazine! Queen B was granted full control over this year’s volume and decided to make history by hiring the young up and coming photographer. Before his hire, Mitchell previously worked with Lil Uzi Vert for the cover of Fader and brands like Givenchy, American Eagle, and Marc Jacobs, so his resume was pretty outstanding!
Mitchell’s hire is not only a huge deal because Beyonce hired him, it’s a huge deal because of the possibility of editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s departure from the magazine! Tyler Mitchell’s hire represents a key milestone in the fashion industry because no other major magazine has had a person of color shoot a cover!
“I depict black people and people of color in a really real and pure way,” he told the New York Times in a December profile. “There is an honest gaze to my photos.” It was not too long ago that Mitchell graduated from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 2017 with a B.F.A. in film and television. His hire was surprising to the fashion world because it wasn’t by Anna Wintour, it was by Beyonce!
Beyonce is our Boss Chic of the week because of her determination to use her platform for nothing other than sheer greatness! Hiring the first black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue not only opens the door for aspiring photographers like Mitchell, it changes the way we perceive Vogue and other legendary fashion magazines alike!
